What can you expect?
I have pupils with a range of abilities and skill levels. You could be a brand spanking new driver with a new Provisional Licence, and never driven a car before, or a full licence holder who hasn't driven for a while. Either way we will have a chat and find out your needs.
According to the DVSA website, it takes approximately 40 hours of training, to get a brand new driver to test standard. Some people do take less, and some take more. This is totally normal.
Your first lesson
Regardless of your skill level, it does need to be assessed, so any first lesson usually starts with myself driving to a safe and quiet place. We will do an eyesight check, and a Provisional Licence check (you should bring this with you for your lessons), then we will introduce the car controls, discuss the basics, and see how they work.
Introduction to routines
We will look to introduce the routines we use in our day to day driving, and check your understanding to make sure you can move and stop the car first.
If you have had previous experience, you may find this easy, or you may just need to brush up. If you are a new learner it may take a little time to co-ordinate all of the new skills.
Learning Aids
The car itself and the exciting environment around us, is the biggest learning aid we have. The car has dual controls, and these can be used when needed. We can also look at diagrams, interactive iPad tools, maps, sat nav, and basic drawings to help us understand the topic we are working on.
Feedback & Progress
So how will you know how you are doing? With all of our lessons, we will set some goals at the start, (Usually agreed at the end of the previous lesson), They could be small goals or, a totally new subject. We will agree levels of support, I can help you lots and talk you through something, then we look to transfer responsibility to yourself, until you become independent.
Don't worry if the lesson doesn't go to plan, and we have to adapt it. This is common, we might decide to work on one thing, but then another more important skill may need some work.
Reflection
I will encourage you, to reflect on your own lessons as much as possible. This will be during the lesson, and at the end. Encouraging your own reflection allows you to gauge what you need to improve on. At the end of the current lesson, we will try to agree some goals for the next one.
